Want to start blogging?

It’s so difficult at first to know how to start blogging. There are so many different platforms out there and all you want to do is start writing. It’s overwhelming at first because everyone and their mother has a different opinion on what to start with first.  My first advice would be to take a look at a couple of the free ones first and have a play around with them.

This post contains an affiliate link.  This means I get a small amount of money if you buy after clicking on the link.  If you want to know more information, then please find it in my disclose page. Thank you

Where did I start blogging?

I myself started off on Blogger, but it didn’t take me long to realise that I was severely restricted and I couldn’t make it look anything like I had envisioned. It’s not a bad platform if you really want to use it, but it was so restricting for me that I moved to the free wordpress.com version. I haven’t used Blogger since, to see what has changed in those three years. All of the free versions are pretty restrictive though, in my opinion.

I feel WordPress is so much better for blogging in general though. I find it easy enough to get the information I need when doing research.  There is so much more information on WordPress from what I have seen.  I can always help you too, so there is a bonus, right?

Self-Hosted or FREE

The first thing you need to do is decide if you are wanting to do a personal blog for your personal use and are not planning on trying to make money off it in the future.  If you are planning on monetizing it at all in the future, even if you are unsure if you want to do that right now, you need self-hosted.

I always suggest self-hosted if anyone asks because it’s so much more customisable. You can find a lot of themes and plugins out there to help you to get it just now you want.   It’s nice to play around with a few too.  I suggest free one’s first.  I’m 3 years in and I still haven’t paid for a premium theme.  I will do sometime in the future, but I love that I can run and build my website pretty cheap.

If you want to go self-hosted and don’t know where to look though, I really recommend 1and1.  I use them myself and I would never recommend anything to someone unless I use and love it myself.  You will be able to find this in my (Affiliate) link here.  Thank you.

Choosing a niche?

The second thing is working out your niche. A niche is basically an idea your blog is based on, for instance, you might want a blog for books, or beauty, or food. There is a bit more to it than that, but you can narrow down your niche as you go along.  It’s not completely necessary to have it narrowed down to a tight niche right before you get started, but you do need to know the general niche you’re going to be writing in.

I actually don’t think it’s entirely important to narrow it down too much at all either.  If you are debating too much where your post will fit into your niche or not, then your are probably restricting yourself.  My other blogs niche is about all things my ideal reader would like.  What she likes, would go in there.

Now you need to brainstorm ideas. Write them down, think of a way you can present what your niche is about, but without going too in depth, so that you can narrow your niche down later on if you want to and it won’t look too out of place from your website.

How did I choose my niche?

I just thought about them off the top of my head and they just came to me eventually and I ran with it. It took me 2 1/2 years to finally find my niche though, so don’t be afraid to just jump in and you will find it eventually.

My other blog Sparkle and Flourish came to me because that’s how I felt.  I felt like over the last year and a half I have sparkled and flourished.  I grew into me and gained the confidence I needed. It’s a blog helping women who are lost and fed up being afraid, stuck in rut, have no self-confidence. I help them to learn that they are amazing and get them started moving in the right direction.  It’s personal development and spiritual related blog.

This blog is because writing has what’s been my passion. I adore building blogs and working in the back end of my website. Choosing Write let’s create was harder. It took me several days.  I chose it though because I loved the play on words. I’m creating a community of like-minded people to help each other with WordPress, blogging and writing and creating content. I want to branch this out to a members site, printables, books and courses all related to building Website and running it efficiently.

It’s a work in progress, but I love a good work in progress, I can seriously get lost for days building a website. It’s one reason I kept rebuilding my site over the years.  I just love it so much.

I’m ready to start blogging

If you decide to start off on Blogger or the free WordPress, you can always move it later on if you need. I can show you how to do that too.  More content is coming.  I’m adding something about building a free WordPress Website at some point in the near future. I don’t know if it will be a mini email course or ebook.  I’m going to get brainstorming ideas and get a few screenshots sorted out.

For now, get deciding on your niche and the name of your website. What’s your niche going to be?
